The Reading Aloud Book of the Year for Morning dawn children, is the Danish children's book Hvem bestemmer noget? (2023), by Jesper Wung-Sung and illustrated by the Finnish artist Jenny Lucander. The recommended age group is 3-6 years.
Hvem bestemmer noget? is a philosophical and humorous picture book in which we meet a curious boy and his father. During a walk along the beach, and later through the town, the child asks questions about whether he is the one who decides about the waves, the traffic rules, the playground, and his freckles. The boy comes to understand that neither he nor his father actually has control over very much, but that it is important to remember the freedom to choose chocolate ice cream, among many other flavors, and the opportunity to close one's eyes and listen to the sea in peace and quiet.
